We were asked to rehabilitate and revitalise the display section of the historic paper factory building, a place of significant national importance; and re-envision the generous open spaces surrounding the building as a freely accessible public place that would result in an insclusive cultural expression.
Remodelling and Restructuring the building’s internal interface was an opportunity to connect with the glorious past of the Paper factory and its role in the Independence movement of India.
The Challenge in designing the exhibition space was to create a symbolic image which would have a stronger impact on the Visitors and make them aware of handmade paper’s strenght, multiple applications, and its relevance in the modern rea of plastic and glass.
A space is dictated by the building’s past the story is revealed.
This 75 year old structure told us a story of tradition, experimentation and artistic craftsmanship. In an attempt totake a departure from the existing modern materials and techniues, we decided to do a Permanent papier- Mache installation in the existing pitched roof structure which was part of the paper factory. Papier-mache was used as the primary means of Spatial/material expression as it seemed the most sensitive and inventive choice to exhibit the character of the institute.
